Collaborative Efforts in Flood Management: Roles of Government, Industries, Communities, and Financial Institutions

When it comes to flooding management, there are a lot of scholars focusing on investigating how professional staffs can contribute to the problem more effectively efficiently, for example, the government providing financial supports as subsidies to encourage geographers study and research more in the historical events and future predictions. However, besides those who work in the professional and directly -related regions, other stakeholders, such as government agencies and engineering industries, can also provide assistance in flood management because the problem is related to the whole society. In this blog, several most relevant groups will be discussed which includes: government agencies, construction industries, community organizations and financial institutions.

 

It is well-known that the government is completely responsible for the flood management by the way of providing financial supports, co-operation in the urban planning. The government has been playing a crucial role in setting policies which means it has the highest level of efficiency when a project is being done. Furthermore, the government is no ta  profit-chasing institution which means, the government can provide the infrastructure or planning at highest level of quality, and in this precise case, it can be shown by building up the hard engineering around the Thames or providing subsidies (including necessities and finance) after the flooding. Therefore, it can be said that the government has been in the most important role in flood management.

 

2. Construction Industries

Besides the government agencies, the construction industries, the businesses providing engineering services, also play a critical role in flood management, but the difference between it and the government is that the industries focusing on the stage of preparations. For instance, before building, the businesses can take the flood resilience into account which can reduce the impacts on destroying the current assets to the lowest level.

 

3. Community Organizations

Residents living in the society can also offer assistance to decrease the scale of damages the flood brings. To residents, receiving the basic education, insights and education of flooding and knowing the method of self-rescue are the most help the residents can offer to the society. Physically, it decrease the amount of injuries and death and mentally, it provides confidence to the society and themselves.

 

4. Business and Financial Institutions

The last one is those financial organizations who have enough assets and cash to support an activity. Because the government has limited money and there are also several problems that the government needs to solve them by using finance, those financial institutions can help provide finance to the technical sectors on investigating and researching the flood-related problems.

 

These are the contributions that the stakeholders can provide to the society on flood management which aims at reducing the impacts brought by the disasters. The natural disasters cannot be prevented but people can try their best to lower the costs.
